Did you notice that it's getting hard to find pictures of Navy ships built 50 years ago?

Here are some possible sources:

National Archives and Records Administration
Still Picture Branch, NWDNS, Room 5360
8601 Adelphi Road
College Park, MD 20740-6001

e-mail at inquire@arch2.nara.gov

Write them requesting the ship you want pictures of by name, hull number and approximate year.  You will receive Xerox copies after two to eight weeks and instructions for ordering a print from a civilian contractor.  Expect to pay $20.00 to $30 dollars for an 8 X 10 color photo.  Less for a black and white.

Joe Hubbard of USS Apache (ATF 67) writes:

Tom, Additional info....I originally made contact with the National Archives via e-mail. You can make information request via e-mail inquire@arch2.nara.gov . When making a request, include your postal address. I contacted them via e-mail. They requested my postal address which I sent.....and....they mailed a copy of the Apache's history to me....no charge. The info they sent came from the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, Volume I Part A, published in 1991 by the Naval Historical Center. This could possibly be in local libraries. I also obtained a photo of the Apache 4 or 5 years ago from the Naval Institute for $8.00. It is my understanding that they have photos of every ship that's been commissioned since the camera was invented. Hope this info is helpful. Joe Hubbard

$12 bucks for a good B&W photo he claims.

A company doing business as USS Seaweed has told us he has many NAFTS ship type photos at "reasonable" prices.  You can find them at http://uss-seaweed.com/.

You are welcome to pull down a copy of any picture you see on the NAFTS site.   Keep in mind we do reduce the resolution to make them load in a reasonable time.   If you want a higher resolution, then e-mail the Webguys at Sparks@NAFTS.COM  for Mike or Snipe@NAFTS.com for TT.  We also are collecting pictures and may have something you want that is NOT on the site!  This service is free for all NAFTS members but be advised we may lean on you a little to join if your not presently a member!

Let us know how the above services work out for you, if you know of another source tell us about it !  Please send us scans of your ships pictures.  If you don't have access to a scanner e-mail Mike or TT.  We currently have a lot of Web space to put them up.
