USS Safeguard ARS 50 returning to Fleet Activities Sasebo June 11 after conducting training in the vicinities of Sasebo, Japan. Safeguard had just returned to Sasebo June 9 after conducting salvage operations from May 29 to June 6 to recover the wreckage of a U.S. Air Force F-16 that crashed into the Sea of Japan off the coast of the Amori Prefecture. USS Safeguard ARS 50  050804-N-4104L-025 Maura, Brunei Darussalam (Aug. 4, 2005) – The rescue and salvage ship USS Safeguard (ARS 50) moves into position to come along side the guided missile frigate USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG 60) and the guided missile destroyer USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60) as the commercial port of Maura, Brunei Darussalam. The three ships, along with USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49), arrived in Brunei Aug. 4 and comprise the exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2005 task group. CARAT is an annual series of bilateral military training exercises with several Southeast Asian nations designed to enhance interoperability of the respective sea services. USS Safeguard ARS 50  050724-N-4772B-022 Java Sea (July 24, 2005) - The rescue and salvage ship USS Safeguard (ARS 50) makes her way through the Java Sea en route to Surabaya, Indonesia for the fourth phase of the 2005 Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise. Safeguard is part of a three-ship task group, including the dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) and guided missile frigate USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG 60) that will take part in CARAT Indonesia beginning July 25. CARAT is a regularly scheduled series of bilateral military training exercises with several Southeast Asia nations designed to enhance interoperability of the respective sea services.
